Running of the Brides!

Filene's Basement's Running of the Brides event is BACK for its 2010 run!

Here's a quick rundown of the schedule:
  • Jan 29 :: Columbus, OH
  • Feb 5 :: New York NY
  • Feb 19 :: Boston MA
  • Mar 19 :: Atlanta GA
  • Jul 23 :: Chicago IL
  • Jul 30 :: Washington DC
  • Aug 20 :: Boston MA
  • Aug 27 :: Cleveland OH

Samples of designer gowns that originally cost $900 - $9000+ are now on sale for $249, $449 or $669!

Unfortunately, I never had a chance to go to a Running of the Brides event b/c I missed the 2009 cycle, but it's so exciting that I may just go check  it out. Just be aware that because this sale is simply AMAZING, it is extremely competitive! Brides that have previously gone say that you need to bring a whole team w/ you (in a team outfit preferably so that you can easily locate your team members) and make signs! For a complete list of tips - check out Mrs. Toucan's experience that she described on Weddingbee.

Engagement Picture creativity - Cupcakes!

I have always been a lover of cupcakes, and when I say I'm a lover of cupcakes...I really mean it. I always tell people that I'm surprised I'm not just a pudgy ball of tub from all the cupcakes I eat. seriously. =)

wish I had thought of incorporating cupcakes into my own engagement shot - this is brilliant and so cute! I think we'll be seeing a lot more of cupcakes in the future.

Engagement Picture creativity - Special Locales

If you and your fiance met in a special city, by all means, take your engagement pictures in that city and really emphasize the culture of the city that brought you together!

For example, my hubby and I met in the great city of New York, and it may seem like I'm a needless promoter for Nike...but Niketown is where we had our first date AND where we got engaged. So it was really meaningful to us when the flagship store invited us to take our engagement shots there (AND give us a huge discount to design some customized sneakers for the bridal party). It turned out to be so much fun and now we'll always remember our story.

Engagement Picture creativity - Jumping for Joy!

haha here's a fun one. There is nothing quite as spontaneous as capturing an action shot of the couple jumping for joy, and if your photographer's talented like the following ones, you'll always have the perfect image that describes just how excited you are to marry one another.

Engagement Picture creativity - Doggies!

I absolutely adored this trend of including your doggie in the future family portraits! And no, it's not just because I think puppies and dogs are ridiculously cute. It's because walking, feeding, bathing, and caring for the dog is going to be a family project, so why not celebrate the fact that this animal is going to bring the two of you closer together (whether you like it or not=p)?

Engagement Picture creativity - Balloons!

In 2009, we saw a lot of interesting trends appear in engagement pictures. Some that I liked and others that I thought were too costumey (sorry! I gotta be honest here! When your children look back at your pictures thirty years from now, they're going to wonder if you were actually living in the 1950s in your mid-20s)

In the next few entries, I'll show you the ones I really liked...and perhaps a few ideas that I think will catch on for in the coming seasons.

First off - there was a case of balloon fever:

Even though the balloon seems kind of random (it's not like you would normally carry around a balloon while walking across the brooklyn bridge), it really brings a focal point and a splash of color to your pictures=D

DIY - Be My Bridesmaid please!

The Wedding Chicks have come up with an amazing DIY project that is uber cute and solves a major dilemma - how do you ask your friends to be bridesmaids??

Here's why it's not an easy question to ask:
1. Though being a bridesmaid is quite an honor, it is also asking someone to take on the responsibility of fully supporting you on your big day (and keeping you happy!)
2. It can often cost a lot to be someone's bridesmaid (e.g. bridal shower/bachelorette planning, arrive in early to be at the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid dresses/shoes, etc.)
3. A bridesmaid shouldn't just be supportive of you up until the "I do's", you picked her to encourage and support you in marriage too.

Because the question carries some weight, it's best to ask your bridesmaids in a more formal way, and the Wedding Chicks have created this lovely DIY card to do just that=D

DIY - Fun guestbook alternative

I love this idea! Heather over at We Met In a Bar created her own guestbook alternative - a really cute framed poster. It's actually a very clever twist on the traditional guestbook, and it can so easily be hung in the couple's new home.

She picked up the frame from IKEA and got a custom matte made for the poster, all for just $20! What a budget-friendly idea =)

Heather is also a master of Gocco and creating her own graphic designs. Go check out her blog!

Money-saving tips from Pastry Girl

I recently came across some seriously adorable cake designs from Pastry Girl, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that she believes in being budget-friendly! Here are some money-saving ways to save on the sweetest part of the reception - the cake!

FAKE IT
Get a smaller tiered cake (or dummy cake) for the reception and ask your baker to make sheet cakes that your caterer can cut and serve to guests

KEEP IT SIMPLE
Cakes from magazines are usually very expensive because they are so ornate. The less decoration on your cake, the less the cake will cost.

ALTERNATIVE DESSERTS
Get a cupcake tower with a smaller cake for the cake cutting.

REAL FLOWERS
Decorate your cake with real flowers instead of sugar flowers – some florists will throw in free decorative cake flowers as part of your package.

FAMILY HEIRLOOMS
Ask your baker to include a sparkly heirloom like a brooch onto the cake that won’t cost as much as time consuming sugar decorations.

oh! and if you're curious to try Pastry Girl's tasty treats, be sure to go to her free tasting and consultation events! She'll be at JCrew Bridal in Soho on January 23rd!

Genius "Build Your Own" Save-the-dates!

Last weekend, my awesome hubby took me to see the most amazing 3-D movie ever made (so far) - Avatar! With the sleek use of 3-d imaging and the teary-eyed (but not sappy) romance, I was reminded of these genius save-the-dates that I remember seeing over on The Brooklyn Bride.

I absolutely adore how the bride's sister (Megan of Brown Parcel Press) designed 3-d glasses for the recipient to build in order to see the message in its wondrous glory. Simply genius!

DIY felt garland - adding a festive touch to any party!

Today I saw a cute little DIY project over on The Purl Bee via The Sweetest Occasion. This garland is so easy - just cut up a bunch of felt circles and sew them together in a row with invisible thread. Then string it up and it's a party! This would be so cute over a colorful dessert table at a baby shower. Click here for full instructions!

make sure you mix up those felt circles in a bag to get a really colorful array of shades!

DIY Eco-chic Bouquets

There is a pretty genius blog entry over at Hostess with the Mostess today, teaching how to make an eco-chic bouquet out of a regular paper bag that you can pick up at any grocery store. While the paper flowers look pretty cool on their own, they look a tad bit more glam when paired with tissue flowers and fresh flowers.

What I love about this project is that you can do it ahead of time! While it was great creating my own bouquets for my wedding, it was pretty stressful to wait until the day before the BIG DAY to go pick up all the fresh flowers. If I could've done at least SOME of it in advance, my last minute stress could have been minimized. Plus, this is so budget-friendly and easy to do! Check out the entire DIY tutorial by Jesi of Jesi Haack Weddings over on Hostess with the Mostess.

Business Casual Bridesmaid Attire

I recently discovered this super cute wedding over on With This Ring...The bride put her maids in an ultra-chic pleated button-up top, simple white pencil skirt and a floral belt that gave the whole look a more formal touch. I love how the outfit really straddles that thin line between business casual and party chic. It manages to avoid looking like your traditional bridesmaid gown, yet it still pulls together the wedding party. Will business casual bridesmaid attire be the next trend? it just might!
